East Midlands Chess Junior Academy Training Tournaments are open to all children U13 & U130 grade
(i.e. Year 8 and under).

6-Round Swiss, so each child plays six games, regardless of results.
A first round bye is available, if needed.

In most junior chess events you play just 6 games of chess, where parents retain supervisory responsibility for the duration.

At EMC junior events we supervise the children for the full seven hours, so parents can drop their children off at 11am and pick them up at 6pm. We also provide chess training in-between games, and throughout the day.

£20 Entry Fee per child, which includes training in-between games, supervision and prizes to be won.

These events will be run under the supervision of ECF National Coaches Christopher Dunworth and David Levens, who is also the ECF National Manager of Coaches & England Junior Selector

And don’t forget to bring a packed lunch & drink!

Derbyshire Primary Schools League Launched

Following on from the recent launch of a Derbyshire U11 Chess Association for the first time in almost 20 years, and the creation of a 20-board Primary age team for the Midlands Championships on March 1 at NHS, we’ve started an inter-schools competition for the current school year.

Teams of 4 players
All players Under-11 (at 31.08.2013)
Maximum 2 teams per school, depending on numbers / groups Free entry for the current season

Derbyshire Primary Schools Pairings 2014 Spring Term

Group A
1: Royal School for the Deaf
2: Etwall B
3: The Elms A
4: William Gilbert A

Group B
1: Etwall A
2: The Elms B
3: Old Vicarage School
4: Ockbrook School

Group C
1: Holmgate School
2: Mundy Junior
3: William Gilbert B
4: Ashover School

Pairings for all Groups (first named team is at home)

Round 1:        1-4       2-3

Round 2:        4-3       1-2

Round 3:        2-4       3-1

All matches are to be played by the end of this term.

My strong suggestion is for all teams in the same group to get together one afternoon for 2 - 2½ hours and play all three matches in one go. This minimises organisational & travelling time.

I’d also recommend that in addition to your four team players, taking a reserve with you. They can play a friendly game with the other reserves.

Please let me have results by email, preferably all three together in one go.

The group winners will qualify for Division 1 next term, along with the best runner up, to play off for the Derbyshire title in the Summer Term.

Teams will then be allocated to Divisions 2 & 3, so that all teams play three more matches in the Summer Term.

East Midlands team in the 4NCL

East Midlands team in the 4NCL.

Out of the 81 teams competing in the 4NCL last season, only two were represented the East Midlands  Pandora's Box Grantham and Ashfield / Breadsall.

Most 4NCL matches are also played in the EM  Hinkley Island in Leics, and Daventry Court in Northants.

Therefore we've decided to enter a team in the 4NCL under the name 'East Midlands'. If a sponsor comes along then we'd amend the name accordingly.

We'd start in Division 3 for the 2013-4 Season, with the aim of establishing a solid mid-table first division team within 3-5 years. We'd also enter a second team over the next year or two, numbers dependent.

We don't wish to take away any players from the two established EM teams (Pandora's Box Grantham and Ashfield / Breadsall), but believe that there is a wealth of talent and ability in the East Midlands for an EM side to succeed.

With a population of almost five million, similar to Scotland, and the 4NCL weekends on our doorstep, we believe that EM 4NCL chess should flourish.

We're looking for chess players with an EM connection, graded 180+, who'd like to play for us next season, and not necessarily every weekend.

If you're interested then please drop us a line.

With Best Wishes,
Christopher Dunworth
